The Phillies’ bats were silent once again Monday night throughout a sleepy loss in the series opener with the Giants. Tonight, those bats will try to show some signs of life in support of Zack Wheeler and as the Phils look to even up the series with the Giants.
Let’s take a look at the Giants vs. Phillies odds for the second tilt of this three-game set and make a game prediction and bet pick on this April 20, 2021 matchup.
Giants vs. Phillies Odds
Here is a look at the current Giants vs. Phillies odds, courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook:
Team | Run Line | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Yankees | -1.5 (+125) | -132 | O 9 (-110) |
Phillies | +1.5 (-148) | +114 | U 9 (-110) |
Last night was another rough outing for a Phillies offense that has scored just 16 runs over its last six games. The center field position continues to be a mess, as the group of Adam Haseley, Roman Quinn and Mickey Moniak has failed to collect a hit in a start going all the way back to April 4.
Bryce Harper stayed hot with a three-hit performance, but this team desperately needs guys like Andrew McCutchen and Alec Bohm to heat up. They’ll go at it again tonight against a Giants squad ranking dead-last in Major League Baseball with just 3.19 runs per game.
The Phillies will try to even things up with Wheeler (1-2, 3.00 ERA) on the mound who will be opposed by Logan Webb (0-1, 4.76 ERA).

Giants vs. Phillies Prediction
Backing Philadelphia this evening requires quite a hefty price tag considering its struggling offense is fresh off a shutout last night, but we have to back Zack Wheeler to dominate an even more pathetic lineup in this one.
The Phillies will also be looking to knock Gabe Kapler back under under the career .500 mark after their former manager picked up a milestone win last night.

Wheeler Has Dominated Giants
Wheeler has held current Giants to a .234 lifetime batting average against him (18-for-77), allowing just two home runs while striking out 22. One of those two homers was hit by San Francisco’s catcher, Buster Posey, who may not play tonight (lineups not yet posted at the time of this writing). The home run ball has been the Giants’ main source of run production this season, so if Wheeler continues to keep it in the yard, the Giants are in trouble here.
Batter | HITS/AB | AVG | OPS |
---|---|---|---|
Charlie Blackmon | 6-for-18 | .333 | .817 |
Trevor Story | 4-for-15 | .267 | 1.113 |
Wheeler cooled off a bit since his dominant first start of the season, but we should keep in mind that this will be his easiest opponent thus far and his first home start since that electrifying seven-inning outing against the Braves in early April in which he didn’t allow a run while striking out 10 in the Phils’ second game of the season.

Wheeler has taken the loss in two straight outings, but the blame can be put squarely on the shoulders of the Phillies’ lineup, which produced just one run in each of those losses. Wheeler held both opponents to three runs in those games, which should typically be good enough to get a win.
An Offensive Opportunity for Philly
The Phillies will face off against righty Logan Webb for the Giants. He hasn’t made a start in 10 days.
The Giants have lost seven of Webb’s last 10 starts and he has allowed 2+ runs in nine of those outings, which might be enough for the Phils tonight given the way things are going offensively for both teams. As an underdog, like San Francisco is today, the Giants have lost six of Webb’s last seven starts, including each of his last four.By comparison, Wheeler has won both of his career starts against SF as a favorite, allowing four runs over 13 innings while receiving 6.5 runs of support per game. He also allowed just two earned runs and one earned run in his last two starts as a favorite of -135 or more overall.
Remember, while the Phillies have struggled to score runs this season and were shut out by these Giants last night, they are still a 7-3 home team which has yet to lose back-to-back games at Citizens Bank Park.
