Philadelphia Phillies vs Houston Astros Odds, Picks & Player Props (June 25)

The Phillies will look to even their three-game set with the Astros in Houston this evening when they send perennial NL Cy Young contender Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.61 ERA) up against Colton Gordon (2-1, 4.45 ERA). Offense was hard to find in the opener as the Phillies squandered early opportunities and the Astros’ lone run came on a solo homer in the eighth inning off an otherwise-dominant Ranger Suarez.
A similar game flow could be in store tonight with Wheeler on the mound and the Phillies offense having some troubles against left-handed arms. The game total suggest as much, with the total set at just 7.5 runs.
This matchup preview will delve into the betting odds, player props and some analysis on how to bet the game.

That the Phillies are so heavily-favored is a testament to Wheeler’s presence, particularly given the Astros’ success over the last month as well as their 28-13 home record.
Houston Astros vs Philadelphia Phillies: Tracking the Odds
Here’s what you should know about the odds movement on this matchup:
Opening odds for this contest saw the Philadelphia Phillies at -161 and the Houston Astros at +135 on the moneyline and not much has changed throughout the day (at least as of 3:44 p.m. ET). The run line opened with the Phillies -1.5 at +105 and has since bumped up a tick to +110. The Astros opened at +1.5 at -125 and has been since juiced to -130.
As for the total, things opened at 7.5 runs with the Over at -115 and the Under at -105. It has since moved to Over 7.5 (+100) and Under 7.5 (-120). Maybe that speaks to the notable absences of Bryce Harper and Yordan Alvarez, or perhaps bettors took notice of a Phillies lineup that looked overmatched at the bottom of the order with Buddy Kennedy and Johan Rojas last night.
The Good and Bad for the Phillies Against LHP
With no prior history, Gordon (2-1, 4.54 ERA) will be a fresh look for the Phillies lineup that actually has is in the top-8 of batting average, on-base percentage and slugging against left-handed pitching this season. Still, the Phillies seemingly have a number of holes in further down the lineup against lefties. Second baseman Bryson Stott has been dreadful against LHP this season, and while Brandon Marsh had minor improvements, he remains vulnerable to splits. In the event the Phillies opt to go with Johan Rojas and Buddy Kennedy again, that platoon split doesn’t look favorable on paper. Rojas is hitting .232 with a .623 OPS against lefties.

Prop Analysis:
Zack Wheeler’s strikeout number at 6.5 (-143 Over) seems attainable given he’s recorded at least seven strikeouts in five of his last six starts, including all three starts this month. He also happens to rank third among all qualified MLB starting pitchers with an 11.42 K/9, though the Astros’ 20.9 K% is 10th best in baseball.
On the offensive side, Kyle Schwarber to homer at +262 odds stands out. Though Schwarber has cooled this month after a torrid April and May, his 12 homers against left-handed pitching this season leads all of baseball.
Astros vs. Phillies Betting Pick
Betting against a Houston team that is 28-13 at Daikin Park this season is a tough ask, but Wheeler is just that good. With Paul Skenes having an uncharacteristically human start earlier Wednesday, Wheeler has a chance to close the gap on the NL Cy Young race with a big start tonight. In this case, the Phillies at -161 might be a situation where the odds are telling the story, even with the Astros on a nice 10-3 run.
Picks: Phillies moneyline (-161)
