Phillies vs. Rockies Prediction
The Phillies made sure not to waste ace Aaron Nola’s turn in the rotation last night, setting up this rubber match. Still, they land in a tough spot in this day game. They send fifth starter Chase Anderson to the hill against a red hot Jon Gray of the Rockies.
Gray Looks Good
Gray has shot right out of the gates this season, despite playing for a team with one of the worst records in baseball.
He will be making his fifth start and fourth at Coors Field. Amazingly, he has allowed just one run in each of his three home starts, an impressive feat in the thin air of Coors Field. In those three starts, he has totaled 18 1/3 innings pitched, giving up just nine hits, none of which were home runs, while striking out no less than six batters in each start.

His performance is even more impressive when considering the opposing lineups he has had to face this season — the Diamondbacks, Astros, and Dodgers (twice).
If you are not aware, those teams are the third, second, and eighth-ranked offenses, respectively, in terms of runs scored per game. For some perspective, the Phillies currently sit 20th in the league in runs scored per game.
There is little to make us believe that Gray cannot contain the Phils’ bats today, as he has been masterful against them at home throughout his career.
He has lasted 6+ innings in each of his three starts here at Coors against Philadelphia, allowing just 11 hits and three runs in 19 1/3 innings, good for a 1.40 ERA. It’s also important to note that he has not allowed a home run to a Phillies batter in this park.
Phils’ Pitching Situation Is Less Than Ideal
Aaron Nola helped a thinly-stretched bullpen out yesterday with a seven inning outing, but the Phillies still had to use closer Hector Neris for the second night in a row, putting his availability today in question.

That’s tough for a bullpen still down both Archie Bradley and Jose Alvararo, particularly with Anderson on the mound. He has not been able to get the Phillies deep into games this season (although manager Joe Girardi has had a quick pull on two occasions).
Still, he has not pitched more than five innings in a start, totaling just 13 innings over his three outings, while allowing a home run in each.
Another four to five inning effort today leaves Philly very exposed, forcing in some vulnerable arms against a Rockies’ offense that averages 5.50 runs per game at home, good for seventh-most in baseball. Anderson’s teams are just 1-3 in his career here at Coors Field. He’s yielded 18 runs in over 19.2 innings pitched (8.24 ERA).
Yesterday’s victory was just the Phillies’ second in eight tries on the road this season. They average just three runs per game after a win so far this season, a number that’s unlikely to be enough today against a Rockies team that has beaten them eight of the last 10 times the two teams have met at Coors Field.
Phillies vs. Rockies Trends to Know
- In the third game of a series this season, Philadelphia is just 1-4, while Colorado is 5-1.
- The Phillies have lost six straight games this season after a win and have just five victories in their last 17 Sunday games dating back to last summer.
- They have just seven wins in their last 26 road games and are a rough 7-23 in their last 30 away games against right-handed starters.
- Finally, they are also just 4-10 over their last 14 games against the NL West and 2-6 in their last eight games against sub .400 win percentage foes.
Phillies vs. Rockies Betting Pick
Facing a red hot pitcher who keeps the ball in the park, getting the series win today seems like a tough ask for this inconsistent Phillies team.
