Aaron Nola Placed on Injured List, Mick Abel Getting First Big League Start

Phillies email:
The Phillies have placed right-handed pitcher Aaron Nola on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 5/15) with a right ankle sprain. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher Daniel Robert was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Nola, 31, has made nine starts for the Phillies this year and is 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA (34 ER, 49.2 IP). He had a 14.0-inning scoreless streak across three starts from April 27to May 9, which was his longest scoreless streak since his 15.0-inning streak in 2020. The Baton Rouge, La., native is in his 11th season with the Phillies. He surpassed Curt Schilling for the ninth-most innings pitched by a Phillie in his start on May 3 and is 13 strikeouts shy of tying Cole Hamels for the third-most strikeouts in franchise history.
Nola was originally selected by the Phillies in the first round (7th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft.
Robert, 30, made his Phillies debut in game two of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals and recorded one strikeout in 0.1 inning pitched without allowing a baserunner. He made three scoreless appearances with the IronPigs (3.1 IP) since being acquired from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Enrique Segura on April 30. Prior to the trade, Robert posted a 1.54 ERA (2 ER, 11.2 IP) with two saves and 17 strikeouts across 10 games with triple-A Round Rock this season. In 149 career minor league games (2 starts), he has gone 11-10 with 18 saves, a 3.35 ERA (74 ER, 199.0 IP) and 263 strikeouts to 80 walks. Over the last five minor league seasons (since 2021), Robert has averaged 11.78 SO/9.0 IP (213 SO, 162.2 IP) with a 30.9 percent strikeout rate (689 BF).
The Hoover, Ala., native originally signed with Texas as a non-drafted free agent on May 10, 2018. After making his major league debut in 2024, Robert went 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA (2 ER, 5.2 IP) in four games with the Rangers.
Rob Thomson told reporters before Friday night’s game that Mick Abel will make his big league debut Sunday, then head back to Lehigh Valley. Nola is coming off probably the worst start of his career, giving up 12 hits and nine earned runs through 3.2 innings Wednesday night. He conceded four runs on six hits through five innings of work last Friday night in Cleveland. His ERA is up to 6.16 and he’s been struggling big time.
