Aaron Nola Sets Phillies Record, Ties MLB Record for Consecutive Strikeouts

The Mets had two runners in scoring position after just four Aaron Nola pitches this afternoon.

Fast-forward 10 batters and three-plus innings later, and they still hadn’t put another ball in play. Nola proceeded to not only pitch out of the early jam, but he went on to set a Phillies franchise-record and tie the Major League record for consecutive strikeouts.

The team record-breaker came on a 91 mph sinker to Jeff McNeil.

With his eighth consecutive strikeout, Nola surpassed the team’s previous record of seven, one held by Steve Carlton, Curt Schilling, and Jerad Eickhoff.

For good measure, he then padded his newly-minted record with a ninth straight strikeout by getting Francisco Lindor to swing over top of a curveball to end the third.

But Nola wasn’t quite done yet.

He began the fourth inning by getting Michael Conforto on a changeup to tie Tom Seaver’s MLB record of 10 consecutive strikeouts. Seaver first accomplished the feat on April 22, 1970.

He was a strike away from besting Seaver’s mark before Pete Alonso finally doubled to end the streak.

After leaving Alonso stranded on third with his 11th strikeout of the game to keep things scoreless, Nola then broke the tie an inning later with an RBI double.

UPDATE: The Phillies still lost.
