And Now, Some Sad, Sad Phillies Facts

The Phillies lost again last night. They’re now 10-19 and heading home to play the division’s best, the New York Mets. Just how bad are things? I poked around on the stat machine and, well, it wasn’t difficult to find really sad figures:

  • At 10-19, the Phillies have the second-worst record in baseball, just ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers
  • With a 4,152 decline in average attendance, the Phillies have the fourth-biggest drop-off in attendance in the league
  • The Phillies have the worst OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) in baseball– .612
  • The Phillies are tied with the White Sox for the fewest runs scored in baseball– 82
  • The Phillies have hit the second-fewest home runs in baseball behind the White Sox– 15
  • The Phillies have hit the second-fewest doubles in baseball– 34
  • The Phillies have the fifth-worst batting average in baseball– .227
  • The Phillies have the third-worst on-base percentage in baseball– .282
  • The Phillies have the worst slugging percentage in baseball– .330
  • At -2, the Phillies have the worst per-game run differential in baseball, by far… and they’re actually worse than the best team, the Cardinals (1.6), are good
  • The Phillies have the sixth-worst ERA in baseball– 4.46
  • The Phillies have the second-worst WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) in baseball– 1.55
  • The Phillies are giving up the most walks per game in baseball– 4.2
  • The Phillies have the fourth-oldest pitching staff in baseball– 29.2
  • The Phillies are among the league’s worst in fielding percentage— .978
  • The Phillies have committed the fourth-most errors in baseball– 23
  • And perhaps worst of all, they have the ninth-worst farm system, according to Baseball America

Things are so bad that it got to the point where if the Phillies weren’t in the bottom three in a particular category, I considered that a positive and almost didn’t include instances where they were, say, bottom-five or bottom-six. They’ve completely reset expectations to the point where their league average strikeouts (both pitching and hitting) almost seem like a win.
