Don’t Look Now, but Jordan Romano hasn’t Allowed a Run in his Last Five Appearances

Yeah yeah, it’s still early. Only four games and four innings pitched for Jordan Romano in the month of May, but the guy hasn’t allowed a run while lowering his ERA by more than six whole points:

In four May games, it’s three hits allowed on 50 pitches, no earned runs, four strikeouts, zero walks. Throw in the Chicago save on April 27th and it’s five clean outings in a row. He’s pulled his ERA down to 8.79 from a hideous 15.26 after that debacle of a Marlins game in mid-April.

In the interest of being a fair and balanced fan base, and fake news media corps, the rules should be simple. If we’re gonna hammer a guy for playing bad baseball, we give him credit when he plays good baseball. Not saying we gotta do something crazy for Romano, like a standing ovation, but he’s been clean over his last five appearances, the Chicago inning, by the way, coming in the 10th with the ghost runner on second. Romano went 1-2-3, getting Michael Busch, Dansby Swanson, and Nico Hoerner for the save.

According to our Sportradar data, he’s still throwing the fastball 40.4% of the time, then the slider hits at the remaining 59.6%. The fastball velocity is up to 95.5 on average, while he’s getting batters to chase the slider at 23%. It’s a 23.3% put away rate for the slider and a 20% rate for the fastball. Back in 2023, his last full season before the injury, the fastball was averaging 96.7, and the chase rates and put away rates for both were obviously up, but if he’s going to show anything like that in 2025, this is a good first step. Unless we just jinxed it.
