Gabe Kapler Promoted to Marlins GM, Will Have Tens of Dollars to Spend
Gabe Kapler making moves in South Florida:
Kim Ng was the previous Fish GM. She left after learning that the organization was hiring a President of Baseball Operations, which wound up being Peter Bendix.
The press release notes that in 2025, under Kapler’s leadership, “the Marlins Minor League system made club history with four different affiliates reaching the Postseason at their respective levels, including Jacksonville, which claimed the Triple-A National Championship.”
Well that’s great. Hang the banner for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
The senior team, meantime, finished 79-83 and missed the playoffs for the 18th time in 20 seasons since Josh Beckett and Pudge Rodriguez delivered a World Series. Their total payroll was $67.7 million, which was dead last in Major League Baseball. The only guy on the active roster making more than two million dollars was Sandy Alcantara. They were 27th in 2024 and 22nd the year prior, so a Marlins’ foray into the payroll top 20 is more rare than a Rick Tocchet team shooting the puck.
Good luck to Gabe, who will have very little to work with down there. He’s gonna have to play Moneyball like no one has ever played Moneyball before. Maybe we can send Howard Eskin to Kapler’s next press conference to ask him about coconut oil masturbation.
