Garrett Stubbs is coming back to the majors, per Dave Dombrowski:
The Phillies President of Baseball Operations spoke to the media ahead of Sunday night’s game and announced that Stubbs will be one of the two players that is called up on Monday, September 1st, when rosters expand to 28 players. Tim Mayza, who the Phillies claimed from the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier on Sunday, will be the other addition to the major league roster.
Stubbs has had a good year in AAA, hitting .265 with 8 home runs and 50 RBIs with a .754 OPS. Stubbs, who has been the backup catcher for the last few seasons in Philadelphia, was optioned to AAA at the beginning of this season after losing the battle to Rafael Marchan.
“He’ll (Stubbs) join us tomorrow. As it stands right now, we’re in a position where we have a hard time finding playing time for everybody on our roster, as it currently is. We thought Stubby would be a nice addition, and what it really gives us is the ability to have a third catcher.”
Tim Mayza will be the other player that’s brought up tomorrow and will be with the team in Milwaukee. Dombrowski said they were intrigued by Mayza and his postseason experience. The Phillies like him as a potential 3rd-lefty in their bullpen. Mayza is two years removed from a 1.53 ERA in 69 appearances with the Blue Jays.
These moves won’t officially be announced until Monday, when rosters can officially expand from 26 to 28. But Garrett Stubbs and Tim Mayza will be those two guys on their way to Milwaukee as the Phillies open up a big series against the Brewers.
