It Took Three Seconds for Sixers President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey to Jinx Jesús Luzardo’s No-Hitter

Tuesday night’s Phillies game featured the TV broadcast crew taking in the game from the seats. It’s something they do annually.

This year, they were parked right behind home plate and were visible for every single pitch. They had a few guests join them, including Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet, before the new Sixers President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey and head coach Nick Nurse joined the crew. Nurse mentioned it was Gansey’s first (presumably) Phillies game before Gansey mentioned the 8-0 start (who says “eight-oh” and not “eight-nothing”?) before mentioning Jesús Luzardo’s no-hitter was still intact.

And then:

As the baseball was ready to leave Luzardo’s hand, John Kruk’s “Oh boy” could not have been more perfectly timed. He knew exactly what was coming.

In truth, I don’t even take a no-hitter that seriously in the fifth inning anymore. If you’re a Phillies fan, you know they head into the fifth inning with zero hits almost too often. In today’s game, no-hitters start to become more anticipated in the seventh inning. While it was a fun moment for TV, one can’t help but wonder if it’s just that Sixers karma rearing its ugly head again. Everything just falls apart whenever the Sixers are involved. Luckily, Luzardo overcame that scare and got out of the inning without allowing a run. Perhaps the Sixers’ curse has now been broken?
