J.T. Realmuto is Deferring Some of his 2021 Salary

Here are some good nuggets about J.T. Realmuto’s new five-year deal:
Realmuto's 5-year, $115.5M deal with #Phillies has an unusual structure, sources say.
No signing bonus. No options. No buyouts.

More on Realmuto's contract, per sources:
Of his $20M salary for 2021, half is deferred to help #Phillies with pandemic cash-flow issues.
He'd then earn the same amount ($23.875M) in each of the final 4 years.

Alright, well there you go. Not only is he a Phillie he’s helping out with “cash flow” issues this year. John Clark says that money will be paid at the end of the deal.
Ironically enough, Matt Klentak is getting some props on Philly sports Twitter today. He correctly predicted the market for Realmuto, though it was always going to be difficult to know what this free agent market would like considering the funky nature of the pandemic. I guess we will begrudgingly give credit where it’s due while affixing a very small asterisk.
