Play the song! Meet the Mets! Pete Alonso is heading to the Baltimore Orioles on a 5-year, $155M deal.
The New York Mets are having one hell of an offseason.
First, they sign Devin Williams, who had an abysmal year with the Yankees, to a 3-year, $51M contract. The Mets were then rumored to “still be interested” in bringing back Edwin Diaz, who signed a 3-year, $69M contract with the Dodgers a little bit after the Phillies re-signed Kyle Schwarber. Then they lose Pete Alonso to the Baltimore Orioles.
Baltimore had interest in Schwarber, as they apparently had the same 5-year, $150M offer on the table according to Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic.. Schwarber decided to return home to Philadelphia, and the Orioles pivoted hard to Alonso and landed their slugger for the next half-decade.
According to a report from Joel Sherman, the Mets never even made an offer:
Don’t you just love watching it all crumble down in Queens? I sure do.
