Ricky Bottalico was Really Mad About Weston Wilson Pitching in a Blowout Phillies Loss

Ricky Bo said this after the 17-7 Phillies loss on Saturday afternoon:

Going back through the postgame show, here’s the full quote: “To me, those last couple of innings, that’s embarrassing. To have Weston Wilson going out there, and basically, I know he didn’t give anything up, but he’s lobbing the ball up there. What is the use? When are you gonna start throwing the white flag? When you could just quit? Because this is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen in my life. The umpire behind home plate was pathetic – and I would have said it if it was the other way around, too – Weston Wilson was throwing balls a foot and a half above the strike zone being called strikes. Now, you couldn’t watch that last half-inning and you’re seeing two pitches two inches off the plate with the Brewers pitcher pitching, and not getting called strikes. That doesn’t seem right to me. If you’re going to open it up, where the strike zone is 8×8, do it for both teams.”

Okay. Even with the full context, still no clue what Ricky is talking about. When are the Phillies going to throw up the white flag? They did throw up white flag. Weston Wilson going to the mound is the white flag. That’s them telling everyone that they’ve given up and they are not going to burn more bullpen arms trying to claw back from a 17-2 deficit.

It seems like Ricky is suggesting… that the Phillies just walk off the field and forfeit the game? Dunno. Maybe they walk off the field instead of putting us all through the charade of a position player toeing the rubber. It is, indeed, pathetic in a vacuum, but there’s a reason for it and the reason is sound.
