Former Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg died:

Sandberg revealed in January of 2024 that he was dealing with metastatic prostate cancer. In December, he posted on social media, that after treatment, the cancer had relapsed and spread to other organs. Then, two weeks ago, an ominous post, this time Sandberg saying that he had been going through “a challenging few months.” He passed 12 days after that message.

Ryno was the Phillies’ manager from 2013 to 2015, bridging the gap between Charlie Manuel and Pete Mackanin. It was a forgettable era of Phillies baseball as the core of the 2008 World Series team aged out of contention, and Sandberg resigned in June of his second full season, going on to become an ambassador for the Cubs.

As a player, he was drafted by the Phils, and debuted in 1981 but was traded to Chicaco and went on to become a 10x All Star and Hall of Famer. He’s on their Wall of Fame, his #23 is retired at Wrigley, and individually he added nine Gold Gloves, seven Silver Sluggers, and was the 1984 NL MVP.

Absolutely one of the best players of that generation. One of the best players on Earth during his prime. RIP Ryno.
