Take It Til You Make It: New York Radio Host Does Hacky Bit About Disgusting Phillies Fans (UPDATE)

I’m almost embarrassed to write this because it’s such a hacky radio bit using the laziest narrative about Philly fans you can find. You can listen to 15 seconds of this radio host at WFAN complaining about Phillies fans and know it’s just a guy not good enough at his job he has to stoop to the same tired tropes like calling opposing fans “disgusting and awful human beings” while providing zero examples. This is Mets fan Evan Roberts, who was in CBP for Game 2 of the NLDS, and he was so disgusted by those awful human beings that he’s rooting for the Yankees in a potential World Series matchup against the Phils. Here’s his recap, via audacy.com:

“They were so disgusting, and such awful human beings,” Evan said. “Imagining them celebrating a championship actually pains me.

“If there is a Yankees/Phillies, World Series, that would be weeks away. That’s time to let the wounds heal. That’s time to remind myself that I never have to go back into that disgusting city…but as of right now, did my experience make it more likely that I would root for the Yankees in a Yankees/Phillies World Series? Oh hell yeah.”

Evan went with his family, and as the game progressed and the Mets ran out to a 3-0 lead, began to wonder how he would leave Citizens Bank Park without incident if the score held and New York took a 2-0 series lead.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘How are we gonna get out of here alive if the Mets win?’” Evan said. “I actually thought that the Phillies winning was beneficial to us getting out of there in one piece.”

Typically with these “experiences” when you start to peel back the curtain they’re either completely made up or someone tried to fuck around and find out. I’ll admit the chances that there were some insults hurled at his family in Mets gear are relatively high, just like the treatment Phillies fans will get in Citi Field Tuesday night. But would anyone do something? Absolutely not. I was there on Saturday when they lost a heartbreaker. No Mets fans were in danger and they were far outnumbered no matter what Russ Joy wanted you to think going into this series.

The good thing is nowadays we have the Internet and videos like this one of barbaric Phillies fans ripping a Mets fan limb from limb with boos! Oh the humanity!

Notice that Mets fan was walking a completely different way than everyone else. It’s like he was looking for it or something.

But you know what, maybe this was the first time Evan has experienced a game in Philly during the playoffs since it’s the only time the Mets and Phils have matched up, right?

Nope. He went to TWO Nets vs. Sixers playoff games:

“They were everything you’d expect,” Evan said. “I’ll give Philly that. Everything that you believe they are, they are.

“I did go to two Nets/Sixers playoff games, and I didn’t feel anything close to the level of disgust I felt last night. It wasn’t even on the same planet in terms of how they acted.”

I can’t believe Sixers fans didn’t take a steel chair to his head with the brutal history those two fanbases have.

The icing on the cake for me is when he says, “I never have to go back into that disgusting city” then mentions he was just there last year for Knicks vs. Sixers. Why does he keep coming back? I can take a radio bit. But a hacky one that’s not even entertaining or has any meat on the bone makes my skin crawl. If you’re gonna do this at least be entertaining enough:

What a complete manchild. All you have to do is listen to five minutes to know he’s not entertaining enough so he has to result to calling the Linc “a green dump”, Phillies fans “drunkards”, and again patting himself on the back for cheering quietly when Mark Vientos hit that game tying home run. This dude filled out an entire bingo board of hacky radio bits in only a 20 minute spot:

This is the worst bit the FAN’s done since Spike Eskin and him yelled at each other because he took off for Opening Day. “Listen dildo-head.” Pretty sure this all went down as Spike had one foot out the door and was coming back to WIP:

Update: Roberts was on the WIP Midday Show (SYNERGIES!) talking about his experience and providing his first actual example of the disgusting behavior from Phillies fans:

So the only example he can give of Phillies fans being ‘disgusting human beings’ is that they saw so many big home runs a couple behind him was about to hit another? How can you not be romantic about baseball?
