The Phillies offense has started to round into form in the month of May.
The offense has scored 7+ runs in seven of their last 10 games. They’re getting contributions from more than just a few players, and that’s going a long way.
Here’s where the offense currently ranks, leaguewide, this month:
- Runs Scored: T6 (36)
- Hits: 4th (64)
- Home Runs: 4th (11)
- Batting Average: 2nd (.295)
- On-Base Percentage: 3rd (.350)
- Slugging Percentage: 3rd (.498)
- OPS: 2nd (.848)
- BABIP: 4th (.327)
- wRC+: 3rd (135)
- K%: 10th (18.9%)
Trea Turner is leading the way for the Phillies right now, slashing .407/.429/.556 in May with a .984 OPS. He’s tallied 11 hits in 6 games. Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Max Kepler are all in the midst of a good start to the month with Turner.
- Castellanos: .346/.346/.538, 9 hits, 2 doubles, 1 home run
- Harper: .280/.357/.440, 7 hits, 1 double, 1 home run
- Schwarber: .348/.464/.783, 8 hits, 1 double, 3 home runs
- Bohm: .318/.375/.500, 7 hits, 1 double, 1 home run
- Kepler: .250/.304/.600, 5 hits, 1 double, 2 home runs
Bohm turning it around has been the biggest jolt for the Phillies. He hit .213 in 94 April at-bats with a .508 OPS. He carried a bottom-five OPS in all of baseball into May amongst qualified hitters, but has really started to find his short stoke again.
He hit his first home run of the season in Tuesday’s series opener against the Rays:
The offense is really finding it’s groove at the right time. They are set to face just two teams in the month of May that currently have a winning record. Now is the time to build up some wins and create some separation in the NL East.
They’ll look to sweep a team for just the second time this season, with their first being the Rockies (the second series of the season). Jesus Luzardo, who currently leads the Phillies in ERA and is 6th in baseball among qualified pitchers, will make his 8th start of the season Thursday night at 7:05 EST vs. the Tampa Bay Rays.
