The Phillies Re-Sign Odubel Herrera

The Phillies announced that they have extended center fielder Odubel Herrera through the 2021 season, with team options that can take him through his age 31 season. Just last week, his name was being mentioned in trade rumors.
This is a good deal for the Phillies. Despite his frequent mental errors, Herrera is a 24-year old Rule 5 get that led the Phillies in Wins Above Replacement, by far, each of the past two seasons. For Herrera, it might not be that great. Sure he gets consistency – barring a future deal – but any time a young player takes a deal pre-arbitration (and their first shot at free agency) they’re taking a risk. Herrera’s deal is for five years, $30.1 million (which turns into 6 years, $42 million and 7 years, $54 million with the team options picked up). Herrera made $528,000 in 2016. Bat flips for everyone.
