The Philly Captain Documentary Won an Emmy

The Trea Turner standing ovation was immortalized last year in a documentary called The Turnaround, and that documentary won a NATAS Sports Emmy on Tuesday night:
Pretty sick! Congratulations to the creators and to Philly Captain, who was the main character in the story, which actually isn’t about Trea Turner at all. The documentary stems from the ovation itself, but it’s centered on Cap and his personal struggles with mental health, connecting him to Turner through a shared obstacle. It hits on this central theme of swapping out Negadelphia for Posidelphia and getting out of a difficult head space.
Turner actually isn’t interviewed in the documentary, which runs about 25 minutes and feels like an ESPN 30 for 30. Our review gave it a 7.4 out of 10, the main disappointment being that it wasn’t long enough, and when it started to pick up some steam it abruptly ended. But it’s definitely worth watching. The shots of Bridesburg and the River Wards are fantastic, really capturing the essence of that part of the city and the people who live there. I think the documentary flew under the radar a bit because it was released shortly after the Mets NLDS series loss, and fans were totally out on the Phillies at the time, but with the benefit of a break, you might find it worthwhile to go back and watch it now. It’s on Netflix.
Sidenote 1: NATAS is the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. These are the same Emmys that you see the local broadcasters win. I think Larry Mendte has like 50 of them. The difference is that the sports ceremony is a national one, while the folks from our TV stations are in regional categories.
Sidenote 2: Does Cap have to share the Emmy with Jack Fritz? Should they cut it in half? What would King Solomon do?
Sidenote 3: Here’s the full list of people from the nomination. Obama won:
