Jeff Passan on fire today. First he gets the Bryce Harper portion of the Rob Manfred clubhouse meeting, now this:

Did the price go down? Yeah, it tanked into the ground. Clase is untouchable now with the deadline approaching. There were rumors that the Phillies had interest in both Clase and outfielder Steven Kwan, perhaps a two-fer type of move, which isn’t going to happen now.

Luis Ortiz is the other Guardians pitcher on leave.

Robert Linnehan at our sister sister site Sports Betting Dime:

Ortiz was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave on July 3. His leave was scheduled to end on July 18, but was officially extended to Aug. 31.

A firm that monitors betting activity reported suspicious wagering on two separate pitches thrown by Ortiz during two games he started. No details have yet been released as to why Clase is now being included in the investigation.

The firm noted suspicious betting volumes on two separate pitches during his June 15 and June 27 starts against the Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals, respectively. Both were balls and were well outside the strike zone.

Larger than normal amounts of money were placed on whether Ortiz would throw a strike or ball in a certain inning.

What’s interesting when something like this happens is that all of the sleuths start to go back through the data and through the video and look for patterns and things that are identifiable. Speculation at this point of course, but intriguing nonetheless:
