On Saturday, Archbishop Wood’s Gary Martin became the first high schooler in Pennsylvania history to run a mile in under four minutes:
AMAZING feat by @ArchbishopWood's Gary Martin who ran a sub 4-minute mile today at the Philadelphia Catholic League Outdoor Championships. He ran it in 3:57:98!
Martin becomes just the 14th American high school athlete to break 4 minutes, and is now 3rd all time outdoors! WOW!!! pic.twitter.com/hC2DCgKsX1— Jamie Apody (@JamieApody) May 15, 2022
As a former member of the PCL I’m happy to call Gary a brother. The PCL is the SEC of Pennsylvania. Whether its St. Joes Prep and Archbishop Wood in football or Roman Catholic and Neumann Goretti in basketball, the PCL is always represented in the state championship. We mop the floor with Suburban One League, I don’t even know if the Pac-10 is still around, and don’t get me started on the Inter-AC. They refuse to join the PIAA so they don’t have to get their brains stomped in by the PCL year after year. Now we dominate track too? That’s just like extra dessert. Another scoop of ice cream on top.
