Longtime Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson has passed away at the age of 78.

He led the Hoyas to the 1984 national championship and sustained more than two decades of success, which included seven Big East titles and a couple more Final Four appearances. Among his standout players were Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo, and Allen Iverson, who shared these memories on Twitter today:

Great pictures there.

Iverson only spent two seasons at Georgetown, but won the Big East Rookie of the Year award in 1995 and led the Hoyas to the Sweet 16. The following season, the team won the Big East and went to the Elite 8, where they lost to Marcus Camby and UMass.

A.I. also famously thanked Thompson at his Hall of Fame induction, which John Clark and others shared online:

RIP Big John. Great coach who was synonymous with Georgetown University and classic Big East basketball.
