I haven’t yet listened to WIP’s new afternoon show with Ike Reese and Chris Carlin for any substantial period of time – certainly not enough to review it – but I thoroughly enjoyed this audio sent along by a super secret tipster. In it, Carlin and apparently the producer got tripped up by whom they believed was Dr. J on the line. It wasn’t Dr. J – it sounded like a white guy – and Reese quickly spotted it:

Carlin: “He is this town’s favorite son. Just one of the all-time greats, he is Dr. J, Julius Erving. Joining Carlin and Reese right now. Dr. J, it’s Chris and Ike, how ya doin?

[silence]

hmm? We got a little issue with the phone? What we got?

[silence]

Alright we’ll see if we can get it fixed here we got one slight little problem. Dr. J, you got us?”

Guy who is very obviously not Dr. J: “I got ya how’s it going?”

Carlin: “Doing well, doing well, how are you doing?”

Reese: “Dude, that’s not Dr. J.”

Not Dr. J: “Hang on just one second I’m walking across the house.”

Reese: “That’s not Dr. J, dude.”

Carlin: “That’s not him.”

Reese: “You hear me? That is not Dr. J, bro. You hang up on him then. I don’t know who that is.”

Carlin: “Not sure who that was, alright. Let’s see if we get this straightened out in a sec.”

Reese: “What the hell? Unless Dr. J turned into a white man that is not Dr. J. The hell? Did you not listen to his voice?”

Carlin: “That did not sound quite right.”

Reese: “And that’s no offense to anybody, I’m just saying Dr. J is like…”

Carlin: “No, I’ve heard Dr. J’s voice.”

Reese: “Damn near Billy Dee Williams when you hear Dr. J talk, man. You know?”

I laughed.
