Danny Green Disputes Tyronn Lue’s Free Throw Comments, Admits Sixers’ Style Can Be “Frustrating to Watch”

Maybe we should send royalties to Danny Green because he keeps providing content via his podcast, Inside the Green Room.
Nothing crazy on this most recent episode, but two clips I think that are worth sharing. First, here’s Green saying that James Harden isn’t getting enough foul calls, and disputing Tyronn Lue’s assertion that Harden and Joel Embiid would not be top scorers without their free throws:
That’s in reference to a quote from Lue before the recent Sixers/Clippers game:
“Embiid is number one in the league in free throws and James Harden is number three. You take away their free throws and neither guy would be top-10 in scoring,” Lue said.
This goes back to age-old argument about drawing fouls and whether or not that’s a skill in and of itself. Daryl Morey seems to think so, and noted that the Clippers’ offense would be ranked 30th in the NBA without free throws.
One more clip, this about the Sixers’ play style:
“There are times where it is frustrating to watch, it is frustrating to play in.”
We knew this when the Sixers traded for James Harden. Between him and Embiid, there was going to be a lot of foul drawing and a lot of free throw shooting. It doesn’t make for beautiful, free flowing basketball, but it is effective on most nights. You put other teams in foul trouble, disrupt their rhythm, and get easy points at the line. It’s not a surprise by any means, the jankiness of the Sixers’ approach, but to see Green admit that it can be “frustrating to play in” is an honest take from a NBA veteran and 3x champ.
