From the Sixers:

Joel Embiid has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will undergo surgery this afternoon in Houston.

Further updates will be provided as appropriate.

UPDATE – Sixers say “Joel Embiid underwent a successful appendectomy today in Houston.”

The man is cursed. Finally they get the knees in a manageable condition and then he misses 13 games with a strained oblique before coming down with appendicitis.

Presumably this would/could explain the illness that had been affecting him in recent games, since the Cleveland Clinic says that “up to 40% of people develop a fever… this means your immune system is kicking into a higher gear. Other symptoms that go along with the typical abdominal pain include nausea, vomiting, and malaise, which is what one suffers when watching a recent Sixers playoff series.

The team is 8th in the Eastern Conference with three games remaining – at Houston, at Indy, and home to Milwaukee. They can beat the Pacers and Bucks without Embiid, but Houston is going to be a challenge. It would SEEM as though this is a multi-week recovery, so we will await word, but his season could be done.

We add appendicitis to an Embiid injury/affliction list that includes:

  • Navicular bone
  • broken face 1
  • broken face 2
  • sinus fracture
  • Bell’s Palsy
  • torn meniscus (left knee)
  • torn meniscus (right knee)
  • torn thumb ligament
  • oblique strain
  • gastroenteritis
  • foot sprain
  • etc
