Living Vicariously Through Pat Croce, who is Currently in Nepal
Pat Croce’s last two tweets:
Does anybody live a more interesting and active life than the former Sixers president? He is currently in Nepal, where it appears as though he is going to attempt to scale Mount Everest. At least that’s what it seems like from the tweet, yeah? He was in Key West for part of February and shared various pictures in which he was enjoying live music, doing 4-minute wall seats, and walking five miles around the island. The month before that, he rang the Sixers bell and took part in the celebration honoring the 2001 squad that went to the NBA Finals. And then BEFORE THAT, he shared some images of the sequioa tree that his wife got him for Christmas and displayed a maple and cherry stand he made for his “Buddhist Pine bonsai.”
This is just in the last three months, mind you. And Croce is 71 years old, looking like the fourth member of ZZ Top as his beard approaches Billy Gibbons length.
Croce is like the most interesting man in the world from the Dos Equis commercials. “I don’t always climb mountains, but when I do, I climb the Himalayas.”
His social media feed is a nonstop torrent of simple mantras that ask us to live in and appreciate the moment, for instance:
“If you find yourself upset over the weather today, see that your mental suffering is caused by your expectations, which are obviously different from the weather Creator. Accept what ‘is’ and BE grateful you’re alive to accept ‘is.’”
Is he speaking directly to us? Yeah, we had to shovel 14 inches of snow, and then a 3-inch layer of ice landed on top of the snow, but hey, at least we’re alive and not dead! Every day you wake up breathing is a good day.
Here’s another recent Croce-ism:
“Recognize that you cannot be in the present moment and simultaneously run your mental movie-of-me. In other words the only way to be at peace is to BE NOW and not attached to your temporary thoughts & feelings.”
God damn. He’s right, you know. You gotta live in the here and now and not get caught up with fleeting thoughts. Unfortunately for me, the here and now is low-level sports blogging while down an employee and then taking care of a 4 year old and 6 year old. Maybe we’ll get out to Kathmandu one of these days, but for now I don’t mind living vicariously through Pat Croce.
Play the song!
