Matt Cord on X:

That’s a great run. 28 years as PA announcer? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? <Tom McGinnis voice>

He was there through the Allen Iverson era, Andre Iguodala jumping on the table, the Process, Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, etc. He called out the names of everybody from Aaron McKie and Eric Snow to Sonny Weems and Zendon Hamilton. 82 games over 28 years, plus playoffs and preseason, is what – more than 2,300 games? EDIT 1 – I did the math wrong because I’m so stupid. It’s 41 games plus playoffs and preseason, so probably close to 1,200 at this point. Matt Cord is a guy who has seen some shit! (EDIT – you know what, I forgot about that one weird season in which Tom Lamaine was the PA guy, so I guess it’s technically 27 years that Cord was on the mic? something like that. it’s all fuzzy)

If you’re a radio listener, you know that Cord recently took over the WMMR midday slot for the late Pierre Robert. Cord had been anchoring mornings on 102.9 WMGK before that.

The Sixers have a tall task in replacing him, but they do have some options. A few early candidates for the job:

  • urologist Richard Harkaway, who flipped the double birds at Russell Westbrook
  • the guy who told Isaiah Thomas he just wanted a free Frosty
  • Butch from Manayunk
  • Eagles Shirley
  • Anna Horford
  • one of the filthy-rich lawyers who sits in the front row
  • M Night Shyamalan
  • Shawny Hill
  • David Dodge, as long as he doesn’t fall asleep

On a more serious note, it’ll probably be another radio guy, right? Someone naturally skilled on a mic and enthusiastic and boisterous. The Sixers need another bald veteran with experience. I nominate Sean Brace!
