The Sixers are Trading Jared McCain
First Sixers deadline move is a shocker:
It’s incredible to think that McCain looked like Rookie of the Year about 14 months ago, and is now no longer a Sixer. He had the knee injury to cut short his first season, then the torn UCL in the right thumb leading into his sophomore season. He was working his way back, fell out of favor a bit, but had started to look more like his old self at the end of January. The Sixers have a the Tyrese Maxey/VJ Edgecombe pairing and the backcourt is more crowded than it was during McCain’s rookie year. They have Quentin Grimes in the fold and two-way players that need converting.
People are going to believe this was done to shed salary and duck the luxury tax, and/or with the two-way contracts in mind. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t, but the return is good. Four picks for Jared McCain? They turned the 16th pick in the 2024 draft into a 2026 first rounder (will be later in the round) and three second rounders. Collect some assets, perhaps to package for a corresponding move? We’ll see.
EDIT – Shams says these are the second round picks – “76ers are receiving the following second-round picks from the Thunder, sources said: 2027 (most favorable OKC/HOU/IND/MIA), 2028 MIL, 2028 OKC.”
