The Sixers beat the Heat 124 to 117 on Thursday night. They jumped out to a big halftime lead, had another crappy third quarter, and then showed a lot of poise in pulling away late.

Earlier, Tyrese Maxey broke Allen Iverson’s record for most three pointers in franchise history:

Tyrese is in his mid-20s and under contract through 2029, so he’ll be here for a while, barring some unforeseen, blockbuster trade. He’s averaging nine three point attempts per game since the start of last season, so in terms of pure volume, he is going to hit 1,000 three pointers very soon and keep on going.

If that 886 number feels low, comparatively, it is. DraftKings put out a graphic on Thursday night showing each team’s three point leader, and Maxey was actually third lowest. Only the Clippers and Pelicans have three-point leaders with lower overall totals, and that’s Paul George with 820 threes and Trey Murphy III with 768. On the high end of the spectrum, Steph Curry has 4,233 for the Warriors and then there’s a massive gap going down to Reggie Miller at 2,560 for the Pacers and 2,387 Damian Lillard three pointers for the Blazers.

What’s somewhat funny is that Allen Iverson was never known as a three-point shooter. His best stuff during his prime was hitting mid-range jump shots and driving to the rack. During the 2000-2001 NBA Finals season, A.I. was a 32% three point shooter who attempted only 4.3 per game. This was long before the analytics era in which three point shooting really boomed as a data-driven strategy.

The Sixers have been blessed with some high-level three-point shooters over the years, like Dana Barros, J.J. Reddick, and Kyle Korver. But most of those guys did not have long Philadelphia tenures. Redick, for instance, has the single-season record for most Sixers threes, with 240 in 2018-2019. Korver is second with 225 in the 2004-2005 season. But Redick was only here a couple of years, and is therefore 9th on the all-time list, behind Joel Embiid, Andre Iguodala, and Hersey Hawkins. Believe it or not, Furkan Korkmaz is 10th all time, with 405.
