St. Joe’s beat Longwood Gardens at home to kick off the season. Sorry, not Longwood Gardens. The Longwood Lancers out of Farmville, Virginia. That would have been a weird basketball game, to play against a sprawling botanical display.

In addition to Jaiden Glover-Toscano being the best player on the floor, which is usually the case, Longwood’s coach ripped his pants and had to tie his suit jacket around his waist to conceal the hole:

That’s Ronnie Thomas, who also wears a bowtie. It made for quite the look, the bowtie + ripped pants and suit jacket around the waist. He was very well dressed, but the pants were definitely too tight for all of the passionate gesticulating he was doing on the sidelines.

Truthfully, Mr. Thomas should be commended, because he had his guys ready to play on Wednesday night. They battled the Hawks right up to the very end, cutting the deficit to four points with about two minutes left on the clock. Then there was a super-scrappy possession in which the ball was bouncing around all over the place and the Hawks were able to scoop it and hit a Khaafiq Myers floater to extend the lead back to 6. Longwood missed a three on the other end and that was pretty much the ballgame. They took 42 three-pointers on the evening, the visitors.

SJU didn’t look amazing, but it’s game 1. Glover-Toscano had 22 on 7-10 shooting. Newcomer BJ Ranson added 17 on 6-13 shooting and Myers also had 17. Neither team shot the ball particularly well, the free throws were abysmal, but it’s only upward from here. Hawks have Lafayette and USF up next before playing Penn.
