A Look into the Odds for Both Games of the Padres-Phillies Doubleheader
By Joe Tansey

The Phillies play their third doubleheader of the season on Wednesday. The Phils are 2-0 in day games of doubleheaders and 0-2 in night games. But Wednesday’s betting strategy isn’t as easy as following those trends because of the pitching matchups in play.
The Padres have the Game 1 edge with Nick Pivetta going up against Mick Abel, while the Phils have the slight advantage with Cristopher Sanchez in his current form against Dylan Cease. I’d be a little apprehensive to back Abel in the afternoon game because he hasn’t been great lately. He allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits in his last two appearances inside Citizens Bank Park. The good thing for the rookie right-hander is that the Padres have been awful lately at the plate. They have a .209 batting average over the last week, the fifth-worst team total in the majors. They just got shutout by Zack Wheeler and they fly back home on Wednesday night for a 10-game homestand prior to the All-Star break. This could actually be the spot where Abel course-corrects and finds a bit of form on the mound, and if that’s the case, the under 9.5 is absolutely in play.
For Pennsylvania sports betting BetMGM has any Any Sport Odds Boost Token to use on Wednesday. I’d look to the Under 9.5 in Game 1 to use that because of the Padres’ recent struggles and the potential for the Phils to not have a ton of success against Pivetta. Pivetta is coming off a 10-strikeout outing in seven shutout innings and he allowed two or fewer earned runs in three of his last five road starts.
The Padres being extra ass during this road trip lends itself to a Phillies money line bet in Game 2 behind Sanchez. I will warn you that the Phillies are 4-0 to the under in Sanchez’s last four starts, so if you’re betting the Over 8, you have to have a lot of trust in the Phillies’ bats. Good news! Dylan Cease allowed nine earned runs in his last two road starts and he’s got a 6.31 road ERA this season. I would use bet365’s 30 percent Same Game Parlay boost on a Phillies SGP to fade Cease in Game 2.
Kyle Schwarber has two home runs and a .429 average in seven at-bats versus Cease. Trea Turner is 3-for-6, Alec Bohm has a home run and Max Kepler has three homers off Cease. I’d use the combination of Turner-Schwarber-Bohm to record a hit combined with the Phillies money line. The odds won’t be available until lineups for Game 2 are confirmed, but I’d assume all three play both games in some capacity.
