I was heated after the Eagles loss and tweeted this out:

This language is harsh and I went directly after a Twitter follower.

I’d now like to take the opportunity to apologize, to absolutely nobody. Because people like @Haah316 piss me off. Go fuck yourself, @Haah316.

I’m so sick of the “team X doesn’t play in Philadelphia” complaints. So what? SO WHAT? We live in a metropolitan area of more than 6 million people and we’re going to write about all of the teams and individuals that have some connection to this region.

First, did you know that the 2020 United States census defined Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington as the 7th largest Metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the county,? That includes 10 counties in the tri-state region and even Cecil County, Maryland.

The majority of sports fans living and working in these counties are connected to Philadelphia proper through their support of the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers. Some may even commute into the city for work, or – get this – lived in the city at one point in their lives! Maybe they live in Delco, which, by the way, is closer to the sports complex than parts of Northeast Philly, which are technically inside the city limits! Isn’t that so silly? Even better, there are people who grew up in the city and moved to the suburbs! And yet we’re out here moaning about lines on a map, like it’s North and South Korea. Parts of the St. Joe’s campus are in Montco and parts are in Philly. Should we sit here and waste time arguing about that? Should we gather a tribunal?

No, because it’s pointless dumbassery. St. Joe’s is a local team either way.

Second, this area is full of Penn State, Delaware, and even Rutgers alumni. I’ll write the rare blog post about Greg Schiano and the pitiful Scarlet Knights football program, because why not? Believe it or not, I get emails – “hey thanks for the Rutgers love, sorry we stink.” And the founder of this blog went to Villanova, which is a Big 5 school that plays some home games in South Philadelphia, where banners hang from the rafters. They won titles with Philly-area kids on the roster.

So while Crossing Broad is branded as “Philly’s Irreverent Sports Blog,” it’s easily understood that we will try to touch on all of the teams that people care about in the Delaware Valley, whether they play inside of the stupid fucking city limits or not. We’ve been doing this for the 10 years I’ve been working on the website, and this was largely Maestro’s philosophy as well. Therefore – congratulations, you’re whining about an editorial philosophy that we’ve held consistently for 17 years now.

By the way, this was the tweet that triggered the idiot:

Seriously? That’s what you’re bothered about? You’re bothered about a tweet that includes some of the regional football programs? Get a life! We do this tweet once a week as a goofy check-in. It’s a barometer reading for how these teams are doing. It’s a 1 out of 10 on the seriousness scale. Sometimes I throw in a totally random team, too, like Father Judge football. Just for shits and giggles. Is that okay? Is that okay with you that we put a high school team in there?

Here’s what Crossing Broad does editorially under my watch:

  • We write 85% of our blogs about the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers.
  • We write about the Union, because they’re a local team with local kids like Cavan Sullivan, and they win a lot of games.
  • We write about the Big 5 schools, and want to do more of that, honestly, but the collective group hasn’t been that good lately.
  • We write about Penn State every so often because the Nitters have the largest athletic program in the Commonwealth and there are a ton of graduates in our region. There are branch campuses in the Philly suburbs that have an enrollment of around 7,000. It’s the Pennsylvania State University and Philadelphia is located inside of Pennsylvania.
  • We write about Temple! I like Temple, and want the Owls to be good (and get the hell out of that conference), but it’s really fucking annoying when Temple people complain about Penn State blogs and Penn State people complain about Temple blogs. “Crossing Broad loves Temple!” “No, Crossing Broad loves Penn State!” Jesus fucking Christ will you people make up your minds? We have a lot of readers who went to one of these schools, so we’re going to mention both on the website.
  • We write about random everything – pop culture, beer, video games, national stories, goofy viral videos, etc.
  • We will always try to include every team we can and give shout outs whenever possible.
  • All of the above rules apply to our social media strategy.

If any of this bothers you, ask yourself why. Probably because you’re an insufferable tool bag. Like I said, the vast majority of our stuff is written about “the four major sports,” which play in South Philly. But we write almost 2,000 blogs a year and I promise you that there is time and space for everyone.

In conclusion:

If you’re in this group of whiners, kindly fuck all the way off. Quit your bitching! Go read another blog. Do us all a favor and hit the unfollow button on social media.

But everyone else is great. 90% of our readers are erudite individuals with critical thinking skills and a great sense of humour.

“Fuck you, fuck you, fuck youuuuuuu, you’re cool, and fuck you I’m out.”
