Beasley Cost Trimming Not Preventing WMMR from Racking Up Awards

WMMR Philadelphia (93.3) rocked its way to a Marconi hat-trick at the National Association of Broadcasters’ Marconi Radio Awards presentation, Tuesday night in New York.
The Beasley Media Group heritage rocker won the coveted Legendary Station of the Year award for the first time, along with Major Market Station of the Year. In addition, Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison, co-hosts of the station’s long-running, top-rated “Preston & Steve Show,” won Major Market Personality of the Year honors.
The Marconi Awards are handed out every year. It’s basically like the Emmys for radio stations, presented by the National Association of Broadcasters. This year, WMMR won not only “Legendary Station of the Year” and “Major Market Personality of the Year,” but they also won “Major Market Station of the Year.”
It would seem as though Beasley staff reductions have not affected WMMR’s overall industry standing. Not at all.
They win three Marconi Awards despite several rounds of cost trimming that has resulted in the departure of Kathy Romano, Paul Jaxon, Pierre Robert’s producer, and then plenty of others across their larger Philadelphia portfolio, like Andre Gardner and Mike Missanelli.
Some other takeaways from the Marconi Awards:
- Colin Cowherd won Network/Syndicated Personality of the Year
- KDKA in Pittsburgh won “Large Market Station of the Year.” Note that Philly is a “major” market and Yinzerville is a “large” market.
- The sports station of the year was WXYT in Detroit.
- WMMR did not win rock station of the year, which went to WDRV in Chicago. Sources tell Crossing Broad that the voting committee penalized WMMR for playing too much Shinedown and Three Days Grace.
