Citi Field Was Taken Over by Norwegians Celebrating While the Mets Lose

The World Cup has given us countless wonderful videos of things I never imagined I would see, and every single day, after thinking it can’t possibly get any better than it was the day before, we’re blessed with a new bounty of clips. Today, though, I think we may have finally reached the peak. I’m not sure there could be a better video than a bunch of hammered Norwegian fans taking over Citi Field and then celebrating wildly after the Mets give up a three-run homer:
This video really, truly rules. I love everything about it. Dansby Swanson (.194/.298/.372, .670 OPS) taking Nolan McLean yard (lol). The Cubs going up three runs in the sixth inning. The cuts to different shots showing just how many empty seats there are at Citi Field as this disastrous, humiliating Mets season keeps chugging forward. And then, the crescendo: the reveal that there are hundreds (thousands?) of Norway fans having the absolute time of their lives, partying, cheering, celebrating, and fully dancing on the grave of this miserable Mets team. It’s crazy. It’s a crazy thing to see. We should all take a moment and appreciate how crazy this is.
I think all of us, collectively, may be becoming slightly numb to wild-ass videos of international World Cup fans interacting with American culture. As time goes by and new clips go viral every day, it can get a little tougher to recognize and feel, “What I’m witnessing has never happened before in history and may never happen again.” I know I’ve been feeling that way a bit. It’s easy to get desensitized – but this video brought me right back. The World Cup in America has been truly miraculous, and I’m thankful it’s given us timeless, instant-classic moments like this one. The Mets season has already had plenty of memorable humiliations (they’re 34-45, 14.5 games back in the division, and have the highest payroll in baseball), but to see a new Mets gut punch like this – one that’s never occurred before – is a special thing, and I’m grateful.
I also think it’s worth noting that Mets fans are the very same people (Knicks fans) who took to the internet to dunk all over Sixers, Cavs, and Spurs fans for having their arenas taken over during the playoffs. Yet here is Citi Field: empty, juiceless, a ghost town save for the Norwegians who’ve taken over their ballpark and giddily do interesting conga line-type dances as the Mets get stomped. The Cubs went on to win this game 10-3. Beautiful.
This is good. This is justice. This is the World Cup. Shame it ever has to end. Let’s keep this sort of stuff going forever… Who says no…
