Matt Rhule Says a Frustrated Nebraska Fan Said “F You” to His 13-Year-Old Daughter

Nebraska has lost three straight games to fall to 5-3, and it sounds like fans are not handling it well:
“I say this for all the coaches out there. Like, I love our fans. But, you know, a guy walked up to my 13-year-old daughter and was like, ‘F you and F your dad.’ Like, I’m not gonna keep coaching if it means my kids grow up screwed up. You know, I’m not gonna keep coaching to see my daughter shook.”
Not good. I wonder how long Matt Rhule will put up with this stuff. Cornhuskers fans have every right to be frustrated with the former Temple coach, for sure — this is Rhule’s fourth year at Nebraska, and the team has yet to win more than seven games in a season during his tenure — but you can’t be yelling at little kids. That’s a strange and bad thing to do. Think we can all agree on that.
Plus, I’d imagine Rhule could find work somewhere else if he wanted to move on. I don’t think he’s a very good coach (he’s 71-65 across 11 seasons in college and was 11-27 in the NFL), but not-good coaches with splashy-ish names get hired all the time. He’ll land somewhere if he decides to bail. I could see it.
Although, he currently has 6 years left and nearly $48 million left on his contract (insane that Nebraska gave him this contract, the hell), which would be tough to move on from. Who knows, maybe he’ll get lucky and Nebraska will fire him/buy him out at the end of the season. That’d be a nice break. He’d have way more time for acting (did you guys see him in Lanterns? Bonus End to the Blog
Thanks to those of you who have pushed on into this Bonus Section of the blog. Good to have you here. Just thought it’d be worth saying here that the main reason this story jumped out to me is that it reminded me of a time in college a buddy of mine was in a similar-ish situation.
December 10, 2011. Saint Joseph’s beat #19 Creighton at home. I was in the student section and we all stormed the court as the buzzer sounded. It was sick. This is a good memory:
More to the point, as tons of students wandered around the court jumping up and down and singing and celebrating, I witnessed a kid from my dorm yell obscenities at future NBA player Doug McDermott, who was Creighton’s best player and son of Bluejays’ head coach, Gregg McDermott. If memory serves, the taunt was, “Yo Doug, go suck your dad’s dick!” to which Doug responded by giving the guy a sad-looking Jim Halpert face. And that was that. I’m not going to offer my opinion on what happened there. It was just something I saw once. Thought I’d share.
That’s all for the Bonus Section. Thanks again.
