Maybe Chuck Fletcher Put Together this Army Deal: Re-enlist for Two Years and You Get to Play GTA 6 for Four Days
editor’s note: We’re not writing a god damn thing about A.J. Brown or the Patriots today. Nobody cares. It’s a joint practice. Nobody “wins” or “loses” a practice. Give me a fucking break.
Check out this story from Eleanor Watson, Jennifer Jacobs, and James LaPorta at CBS News:
Some U.S. military members who are itching to play a video game they’ve anticipated for over a decade can trade a commitment for several more years of their life in uniform for a few days off to play Grand Theft Auto VI.
As an incentive to reenlist, a U.S. Army unit in Georgia is offering active duty soldiers a four-day pass to play the popular game when it’s released this fall, U.S. officials told CBS News.
…
Twenty soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia in the Army’s 9th Brigade Engineering Battalion, part of the 3rd Infantry Division, have already chosen this incentive as part of their reenlistment, an Army spokesperson told CBS News on Wednesday.
…
The Army memo, which has circulated online, says any soldier who signs a reenlistment contract between Aug. 1, 2026 and Nov. 14 will be authorized for a special four-day pass designated to coincide with “the highly anticipated release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6).”
About 130 soldiers are currently eligible for the incentive… Eligible soldiers must reenlist for a minimum of two years and up to six years.
Okay. Here’s the rub –
Couldn’t you just not re-enlist, and then sit on your ass and play GTA VI for as long as you want? Yeah, you would have to find another job, but you could flip burgers or sell insurance or become a sports blogger, instead of re-upping with Uncle Sam.
Point being, this doesn’t seem like an equitable deal. Like Kiko Alonso for Shady McCoy. The Army offers four days to play a video game. In return, you have to re-enlist for at least two years.
Who came up with this trade, Chuck Fletcher?
Now, if this was available 25 years ago, then you’d give it serious consideration. If I had early access to Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, my ass would enlist faster than you can say “Kandahar.” I’ll go look for George W. Bush’s weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but first let me finish this Cow Level run.
