RADIO WARS: Bill Colarulo Issues Formal Challenge to Spike Eskin After Being Blocked on Twitter

A reader sent over this clip, which made me laugh.

The background is that Bill Colarulo called out Spike Eskin earlier in the week after Eskin labeled Bryce Harper a “selfish” player. That was in response to Harper telling reporters that he didn’t care what people thought about his baserunning. Mind you, Harper had just hit for the cycle, and was on fire in two big wins against the Mets on Saturday and Sunday, so Spike going Negadelphia was pitiful even by 94 WIP’s low standard of discourse.

So here comes Colarulo on Wednesday, saying he’s been blocked by Eskin:

“I went after a guy on another station, let’s call him by name – Brett Eskin. So I went after him and said ‘really?’ Like, I’ve been critical of Bryce Harper, too. But today? After the guy has the weekend he has, you’re gonna try to turn it into a negative. So I went on a little rant. Said if you’re being a tough guy say it to his face, and Crossing Broad picked it up and they wrote an article about it. So people send me things. I get something sent to me on Twitter last night (Tuesday night) and it was a tweet from Brett Eskin. So I click on it, he blocked me! He blocked me! I just called you basically a coward and said ‘tell Bryce Harper to his face how you feel about him,’ and now you block me on Twitter! Are you that soft?” … “Maybe I should issue a formal challenge to Brett Eskin if he wants to debate me on something sports related. The fact that he’s gonna act like he didn’t see what I did, but then he blocks me? Come on, man! Come on. I’m gonna challenge him to a debate. You love debating all your callers, why don’t you come after me a little bit? Why don’t we debate?”

It’s true that Spike is a blocker. Crossing Broad has been blocked for years, and I think it happened because of the Mike Golic/morning show rumormongering, but I’m not entirely sure. However, the other WIP guys aren’t blockers. They have relatively thick skin. They know that saying dumb shit on the radio is going to garner a response, but they accept the criticism for what it is, or they don’t care. Maybe they just say their dumb shit and log off.

ANYHOW –

This is a good idea, a debate. Maybe instead of the “Great Birds Debate”* or whatever tired shit they do at MaGerk’s, we can replace it with a Spike Eskin vs. Bill Colarulo debate. It will be simulcast on both stations at the same time. We will hold it at a neutral location, maybe one of the breweries up here like Imprint or Well Crafted. Yes. This will be great radio. I will moderate in a fair and balanced fashion, no bias, and when it’s time to switch subjects, Hugh Douglas will walk onto the stage and say “I’m sick of this fucking conversation.” We’ll bring in a carefully-curated panel of sports experts to judge. This is some high-level academia right here, like Ivy League debate team stuff, not a bunch of low-IQ, hoagie mouth radio listeners.

Let’s set this up. Have your people call my people.
