RADIO WARS: Jon Marks Goes After Former Colleague Joe Giglio for Doing Embarrassing “First Take” Radio
We were just having a quiet Wednesday evening and then:
WIP is entry-level performative outrage at this current point in time. It’s normally bad but now it’s really bad. There’s nothing worth listening to on the major dayparts, just some of the night and weekend programming and the exclusive interviews that you get when you pay a lot of money for the Eagles’ and Phillies’ radio rights. I can’t believe the Birds’ organization actually puts up with their longtime partner’s comprehensive effort to create the most toxic environment in Philadelphia sports.
Anyway –
The takeaway here is Marks going directly after the guy who used to be his lead in. He likes Joe Giglio, but not “embarrassing” First Take radio. Now you’ve got both Bill Colarulo and Jonny Marks going at WIP and asking people to switch over when it wasn’t long ago that neither station would even mention the other by name.
It’s so funny because you catch the WIP folks outside of WIP and they’re all normal, decent people, or at least 95% of them are. You run into any of them at the bar or get to know them from other jobs, before they started working at WIP, and it’s just like any other acquaintance. You’re shooting the shit, talking about regular stuff, asking how the wife and kids are doing, blah blah, etc.
But something perverse and toxic happens at 2400 Market St., or on location at Chickie’s and Pete’s or The Borgata or whatever slimy car dealership is hosting the next remote. The microphone light goes on and everyone switches into performance mode. They’re doing hot takes and rage bait and being negative and saying the dumbest, stupidest, most pointless shit, just to provoke a reaction. They drag everyone down into the Eagles muck and scrape the bottom of the content barrel with fake outrage and idiotic declarations – “JALEN HURTS SHOULD BE BENCHED!” Rinse and repeat to great effect because there are a lot of mindless dolts in the Philadelphia region who grew up on jabronies like Angelo Cataldi and Howard Eskin.
It’s so weird. It’s like there’s some odorless gas that goes through WIP employee nostrils and corrupts them entirely and takes control of their nervous system, like the mushrooms from The Last of Us. I don’t even think they can help it; I think they might be under the control of an insidious artificial intelligence via some sort of implanted chip device. It’s like there’s a WIP stank that wafts through the air and can’t even be purged by the new air filtration system they put in the Wells Fargo Center during the pandemic. You take each one of these people out of the WIP environment and they regain control of their senses, but once they’re placed back into that environment, the corruption again takes hold, their eyes glaze over, and they’re ready to fire Nick Sirianni, start Tanner McKee, and blather on and fucking on about “accountability” and other such nonsense they don’t even believe.
Do WIP employees need saving from themselves? That’s today’s Twitter poll question. You can also get in at 215-592-9494, we’ve got a couple of open lines.
p.s. – here’s the other thing – Joe didn’t start doing First Take radio until Spike Eskin became program director. makes you wonder, doesn’t it!
