Sheetz is Trying to Move into Delco*
The Altoona-based convenience store chain, which opened its first store in the Philly suburbs last week, has submitted a sketch plan application to build a 6,000-square-foot location in Chadds Ford.
It would be Sheetz’s first outpost in Wawa’s home county.
Let’s be honest with ourselves. Chadds Ford is Chester County. Hence the asterisk. Yes, it’s technically inside of the Delco line, and Wawa is Delco based, but Chadds Ford Delco is not Lansdowne Delco. It’s not Secane Delco or Primos Delco. Even last week there were people in the comments saying that Limerick isn’t even part of “the Philadelphia area,” which I disagree with, but there’s a difference between Sheetz straddling the suburb/exurb line vs. dropping a new location on Aramingo Avenue, for example.
In the follow up to last week’s grand opening, a lot of the feedback was pretty similar. It seems as though people remain Wawa loyalists around here, but they do lament the thought that the quality has gone down over the years. The sandwich bread, the meat, the food in general. Their hope, generally speaking, is that Sheetz moving in on Wawa’s turf lights a fire of sorts, like it creates some sort of competition that spurs a Wawa RETORT, and we get a renewed effort from Wawa in its home market. They’ve been expanding at such a rapid rate that sometimes it feels like they take their Philly base for granted, and that’s allowed the crusty Yinzers to come down from the hinterlands and make inroads in the Delaware Valley.
It’s CONVENIENCE STORE WARZ! (get it? with the Z? for Sheetz?…)
