It’s not the Olympics (not that we want that), or the Super Bowl (we really want that), or the World Cup (that’s on the whole country) but hey, it’s something: The 2016 Democratic National Convention has been awarded to Philadelphia. The convention will take place the week of July 25th, 2016, likely at the Wells Fargo Center. Early in the process, Philly was in the running for the Republican National Convention, but that will be held the week before in Cleveland, where they’ll name-drop LeBron James a thousand times. Still, it would have been nice to probably run into Herman Cain getting all creepy in a Hard Rock Cafe.

Philly beat out Columbus, Ohio — as we should have — and Brooklyn to host the convention. It’ll be the first major political convention in the city since the 2000 Republican Convention. The whole thing is said to cost $55 million to $60 million, but it should also bring in some tourism money for the city. And if they’re going to come up short? They can totally use some of that leftover Pope money from his visit.

First the Pope, then the DNC. What’s next, an MLB All-Star Game? Probably in ten years. We’re on a roll.

UPDATE: Looks like USA Today was a little too ready to roll with this:
