United States Now +4000 to Win World Cup After 4-0 Thumping by Switzerland

A United States team featuring two Philadelphia Union players and three alumni was clobbered 4-0 on Tuesday night in Nashville by Switzerland:

In a single-game vacuum, this is not a big deal. The U.S. rolled out what amounted to a C squad in a Gold Cup tune up while the Swiss started most of their top players, guys who play for teams like Manchester City and Monaco and Leverkusen. Most of our best players are not with the team at the moment and Switzerland is a perennially-underrated UEFA country.

Coincidentally, it’s now one year until the start of the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and BetMGM sent over some updated cup-winner futures that look more concerning than a call to the Phillies’ bullpen:

Line movement (Open to Current)

  • Spain +1000 to +450
  • Argentina +900 to +800
  • Portugal +1400 to +1200
  • USA +1800 to +4000

BetMGM notes that the odds opened in December of 2022, after the last World Cup, so in the 2.5 years since, the USMNT has slipped by a +2200 total while going through a bit of turmoil, changing coaches while and more or less suffering an identity crisis.

Losing to Turkey and Switzerland isn’t the end of the world, but the problem is that the team has looked quite like shit for some time now, with just two wins in six games this year and not a lot of time to prepare for a World Cup that will largely be played on home turf. This was supposed to be a referendum on American soccer, an inflection point where we show the rest of the world how far we’ve come, but the stadiums are empty, the buzz is zero, and there’s been a lot of bickering about the best path forward. Christian Pulisic took a summer break, you have alumni like Landon Donovan expressing their displeasure with that and other items, and there is constant gum flapping on the topic of MLS players vs. European-based players and what the program needs to move forward. The reaction to each individual game is comical, akin to a Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, where every loss demands someone’s firing and every win was flawed in some way. Finding steady USMNT opinions is like finding a needle in a haystack, but there just aren’t a lot of games, which is why the takes are what they are.

But listen – you won’t get better odds on the USMNT to win it all. We are not going to be a World Cup favorite at any point in the near future, but sprinkle a unit on the +4000 or else you hate your country. Imagine all of the money you will then have to spend on NJ casino apps. Go go, USA!
