You Can Get a $30 Philly Cheesesteak with Lemon Soy Sauce in Bermuda

A reader sent this over. He’s in Bermuda and came across a “Philly cheesesteak” on a restaurant menu:

Lemon soy sauce? Swiss cheese? A garlic baguette?
“Just for the record I did not try it,” reader writes. This is at a place called “White Horse,” not the White Horse Pike in South Jersey, but a decent-looking spot in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I scrolled through about 400 Google photos and came across all sorts of things, like a sushi platter inside of a pirate ship and some great-looking seafood, but no cheesesteak. After a little bit of sleuthing, it was determined that the “cheesesteak” was only recently added to the menu and that’s why no one has uploaded a photo. So we’ll have to send Pagan to Bermuda for a review, and expense it to the company.
What’s always curious about cheesesteak efforts in other parts of the world is that they typically throw a bunch of extra stuff in there that you don’t need. In this case, mushroom drizzle with lemon soy sauce. The true essence of the cheesesteak is that less is more. You only need bread, steak, and cheese. Onions optional. That’s pretty much it. That’s the base. Anything more is unnecessary.
And sure, it’s always interesting to take something and put a spin on it, but there is a thin line between gastronomic inventiveness and abomination.
