Welsh soccer team Wrexham is coming back to Philly this summer:

Wrexham is the team that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought back in 2021, with the goal of turning the club around and getting them promoted to the Premier League. They’re pretty close, actually, and currently playing in the Championship, which is the second tier of English football. They’re currently 6th place in the table, and if the season ended today they would take part in a four-team playoff, fighting Hull, Ipswich, and Millwall for the third and final promotion spot.

McElhenney is a Philly native and therefore the local Wrexham interest been there since the purchase. They came to Subaru Park back in 2023, but played the Union’s second team to a 1-1 draw as part of a preseason tune-up. This time around, they’ll play Premier League team Sunderland, which fought their way back to the Prem after eight years in the lower divisions.

The Union’s first team plays Atlanta United at Subaru Park on August 1st, the night before the Wrexham/Sunderland game. So it’s a weekend 2-fer.
