The Flyers are one of the hottest teams in the NHL. So are the Tampa Bay Lightning. And they’re a much better team than the Flyers.

And it showed last night. Tampa scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game en route to a 5-2 win inside the Wells Fargo Center. It was the worst start for Carter Hart, who gave up all three goals on nine shots before being pulled for Brian Elliott. Elliott was just activated off IR after a conditioning assignment in Lehigh Valley. Michael Raffl and Travis Konecny scored the two Flyer goals.

The next four games for the Flyers will be vital for their potential playoff chances. They’re at Montreal tomorrow night before hosting the Penguins in the Stadium Series game. Next week, they host Buffalo before traveling to Columbus. Three of those four teams are currently in the playoffs, while the Sabres are also in the playoff hunt with 63 points, which is the same as the Flyers. This is where their hotness needs to last.

There’s also the February 25th trade deadline fast approaching, which could mean the end of the line for some players. Including Wayne Simmonds? We’ll see.

The Roundup:

The Phillies made news by not signing Manny Machado. Instead, he went to the San Diego Padres for an unreal 10-year, $300 million deal with an opt out midway through. The reactions were kind of expected, including from a very angry White Sox organization.

So that means Bryce Harper is the biggest fish left on the market. Matt Klentak better do something soon to make sure he’s in red pinstripes. Klentak also mentioned the price tag was too high on Machado, which contradicts the “stupid money” comment from earlier in the offseason by owner John Middleton.

The Sixers play tomorrow against the Heat, but they’ll be on the latest cover of Sports Illustrated. It’s the first time the team appeared on the SI cover since 2008, when Elton Brand was on it.

Renderings for a new-look main concourse inside the Wells Fargo Center were unveiled.

In other sports news, former Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe passed away at the age of 92.

Here’s a very interesting article on how Tim Donaghy fixed games he betted on while working as a ref in the NBA.

The AAF named Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon chairman of the league after he bailed the league out of not paying their players.

Major League Baseball is adding new rules to prevent sign stealing.

In the news, it’s gonna be a pretty messy day.

USA Gymnastics has another new president, and some of Larry Nassar’s survivors are still not happy.
