Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid Went to Made in America Yesterday

Jim Adair - September 6, 2015

Last night, Beyoncé closed out day one of the annual Made in America festival. She spent a good amount of time wearing a sparkly James Harden onesie, but did play to the crowd a bit by tossing on the also-sparkly Sixers number above for a bit. And at least two crowd members were super into it: Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid.

embiid snap

Yes, Embiid was on crutches, and yes, they could have been closer. But with the size of those dudes, they were just being polite and not blocking anyone’s view. There should be a separate section for dudes over 6’3″ at concerts, and these dudes are well over 6’3″.

UPDATE: Is Nerlens Noel’s Suit Jacket Lined with New Sixers Jerseys?

new nerlens

It certainly looks like it, and they look … good? The main attraction is in the details, and we don’t really see any of those here, but it’s a good start.

UPDATE: The Sixers (and Noel) confirmed that they are indeed the new unis, but they don’t show everything. “As much as you can show,” Nerlens told Mike Sielski. “The stars on the side, you can’t fit it all in there.”

Sixers Roundup: Lottery, D’Angelo and Dario

Jim Adair - May 14, 2015

nerlens lottery

Draft hair

After saying Doctor J couldn’t make it and having people on Twitter suggest everyone from A.I. to Joel Embiid to Ric Flair (my choice), the Sixers have decided to send Nerlens Noel as their representative at the draft lottery. And along with what it says in the Tweet above, if the Sixers get one, six, and eleven, it should be against the law to ever get rid of Nerlens.

D’Angelo Russell

Post-lottery comes the draft, and D’Angelo Russell is reportedly one of the Sixers’ main targets. According to Keith Pompey, Russell would love to join the Sixers and he “has the best chance to become an NBA All-Star of the four projected top picks,” according to an anonymous scout. The Sixers plan to interview Russell today and I can only assume their side of the conversation will go something like this: It was you. It’s always been you. We traded MCW to make room for you.

And in interviews with former draft picks, Hoops Hype talked to Dario Saric. Saric pretty much scuttled any hope that he would be a Sixer next season, though that was always a slim possibility. “Next season?” Saric said. “I don’t know and I can’t speak about that because I don’t know yet the situation, how things are going to work out. I can say that I’m happy here at Efes and I’m also happy that people from Philadelphia came here and want me there. That’s all I can tell you right now. I don’t have any information or any feeling regarding what could happen. I’m just focused on the rest of the season.” He added that he wouldn’t mind staying in Europe to develop since he thinks he could improve his individual game in the NBA but is better off improving his team game in Europe. You really gotta like this guy. [Editor’s note: We hate Dom Brown for this sort of mentality, because we’re fickle. And because Saric has a chance to be something more than a one-time, Tinder-philanderer, all-star.]

Nerlens Noel Finishes Third in Rookie of the Year Voting

Nerlens Noel really turned it on the second half of the year and made a huge push in the Rookie of the Year race. But was it enough? Not even close. Nerlens finished third with 141 total points to Nikola Mirotic’s 335 and Andrew Wiggins’ 604.

Only Keith Pompey, Mike Breen, and Molly Sullivan gave Nerlens #1 votes — et tu, Zumoff? — while people like Bill Simmons and Hubie Brown tossed 2nd place votes his way. Here’s how it all broke down:

The Sixers will have another shot at bringing that ROTY trophy to the Wells Fargo next year with Joel Embiid (and maybe D’Angelo Russell). The year after that? It’s Dario’s to lose.

Scott O’Neil Uses CEO Speak to Oversell Nerlens’ One DPOY Vote

Jim Adair - April 24, 2015

oneil wrong

You know, technically he’s not wrong. He’s just missing some words in that sentence. “Nerlens Noel finished 3rd in voting for Defensive Player of the Year on the ballot of Jason Jackson of Sun Sports.” So technically, Noel did finish third “in vote,” but not “in voting.” The overall results looked like this:

total votes

While we commend Noel for an impressive season, it looks like O’Neil put on his CEO hat and spun “one DPOY vote” into that not wrong, but also not totally right Tweet. That hashtag game is on point though. #spinmaster

Kyle: Kind of impressed by this. Not gonna lie. That sort of PR chicanery doesn’t grow off trees… except maybe the ones in the arboretum at Villanova.

An Inflatable Franklin Scared the Crap out of Nerlens Noel

Jim Adair - April 1, 2015

Voila_Capture 2015-04-01_02-47-22_PM

The Sixers pranked their players and coach (who took it completely in stride) by having an inflatable, Knick-loving Franklin come to life and lunge at the unsuspecting victims as they were leaving the locker room. Thomas Robinson almost throws a punch, Joel Embiid gets all of his fear out via profanity, and Nerlens Noel might need to  grab new pants. Video after the jump. Continue Reading

Nerlens Noel Calls Ish Smith the First “Real Point Guard” He’s Played With

Nerlens Noel is beginning to come into his own as an NBA player, potential Rookie of the Year, and defensive power. Much was made about Noel’s longtime friendship and relationship with former Sixer Michael Carter-Williams, but Noel really stepped his game up since MCW became a Buck. And he’s meshing really well with current starting point guard Ish Smith. In fact, 20.3% of Ish Smith’s passes as a Sixer have been to Nerlens Noel, and Noel shoots 71.2% on shots taken after those passes. So it makes sense that Nerlens is excited. But this still has to hurt:

nerlens ish

Sorry MCW, Tony Wroten, Isaiah Canaan, Tim Frazier, Larry Drew, and part-time Alexey Shved and JaKarr Sampson.

Nerlens Noel Deserves to be Rookie of the Year

Jim Adair - March 30, 2015

The above image was put together by the Sixers, via Tom Moore, to show just how historic Nerlens Noel’s season has been so far. The Rookie of the Year momentum is turning, but it’s still in Andrew Wiggins’ corner (because points). But when you put Nerlens’ numbers up against those in history — and not just rookies — you can actually see his superstar potential on paper. This weekend, he had 38 points and 25 rebounds in two games (most came on Friday night). He’s been incredible to watch. And now, I can’t wait to hear all of the “just wait until they trade him” comments.
