NHL All-Star Travis Konecny Opens Up About His Breakout Season, Playing with a Contract, Chirping at Opponents, and More

Russ Joy - January 23, 2020

The Flyers enter the All-Star Break with a renewed sense of confidence after knocking off some of the best teams in the league over the past two weeks, including Washington, Boston, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. Sure, they’ve had a clunker or two (see: Montreal), but for the most part, this team is ahead of where many expected them to be at this point in the season. Prior to the season on Snow The Goalie, Anthony and I laid out a list of “ifs” that needed to go right for the Flyers to contend for a playoff spot in a highly-competitive Metropolitan Division with a ridiculous playoff seeding system. I would argue that the biggest breakout star this season has come from fourth-year forward Travis Konecny, who’s just six points away from tying his career high in points at the NHL level, despite being just over half of the way through the season.

Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to sit down with Konecny to discuss his breakout season and how having his contract situation resolved has been allowed him to play freely. He also shared some stories about interacting with fans, calling Malkin a “****ing nerd”, which of his teammates is a low-key chirper on the ice, and what he watches while away from the ice.

Next week, we’ll release our interviews with defenseman Matt Niskanen and rising star Joel Farabee. If you haven’t subscribed to Snow The Goalie already, please make sure you do. It’s available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, and wherever else you get your podcasts!

How the Flyers’ Team Dynamic Has Led to Early Success

Russ Joy - December 5, 2019

The Flyers are good. Really good.

In fact, they’re the hottest team in the city and yet they’ve barely broken into the media sphere which boasts the “4 for 4” vernacular we’ve grown accustomed to hearing. Not only is the team playing great hockey, they’re getting along really well off the ice. I know some people cast aside anything that comes remotely close to the human side of professional sports, but doing so would be a mistake. In my first season covering the Flyers, I focused more of my time observing the off-ice interactions of the team more than I did on the on-ice product. For the latter, I’d often pick the brains of those who’d forgotten more about the team and the in-and-outs of the sport at the professional level than I could learn in a short period of time. But last season, there was something so clear it couldn’t be ignored: the 2018-19 Flyers were a fractured locker room. The word “scared” was thrown around a bunch, as was a constant need to address the team’s confidence – or often lack thereof – in the way they were playing. Fast forward to December 2019 and that’s all gone. It shows.

Travis Konecny is Exceeding Expectations and Drawing Incredible Comparisons

Russ Joy - November 6, 2019

Another game, another big goal from Travis Konecny.

His tally with just 1:12 gone in the third period of Tuesday night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes turned out to be the winner:

That goal, his eighth of the season, was no fluke. Konecny is off to the best start of his career, leading the team in goals (8), assists (7), and points (15). You don’t have to be a mathematician to figure out that those fifteen points in fourteen games puts him in the impressive group of players averaging more than a point per game. In fact, Konecny’s 1.07 PPG is good for 19th in the entire NHL. Were he to continue at this rate for the entire season – an admittedly tough task – he would become just the third Flyer since the 2009-10 season to eclipse the point-per-game threshold, joining Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek.

I asked head coach Alain Vigneault if he’s been surprised by the winger’s productivity thus far:

Go Ahead, Call it a Comeback: Flyers 7-4 Blue Jackets

Russ Joy - October 27, 2019

With 17:45 remaining in the third period, Josh Anderson took a wide shot that ricocheted off the board behind the Flyers’ net and deposited it past the outstretched glove of a sprawling Brian Elliott to put the Columbus Blue Jackets up 4-2 in the teams’ first matchup of the season. It looked like it would be more of the same for the Orange & Black, who came into Saturday night’s game having dropped all four matchup a year ago and an even more woeful 5-11-8 record against Columbus dating back to December 21, 2013.

It would’ve been understandable if Anderson’s goal shut down any hope of a Flyers comeback and to be quite honest, last year’s team may have very well turned off the effort when they fell behind 3-2. But this isn’t your 2018-19 Flyers. This isn’t your 2017-18 Flyers. Heck, this isn’t the past six years’ Flyers. This is a confident bunch that entered Saturday night’s game outshooting, out-chancing, and outworking the opposition game-in and game-out.

When I went back to rewatch the third period this morning, my wife looked at the score with just over nine minutes remaining and uttered, “I thought you said they blew out Columbus.” With both teams skating 4-on-4, captain Claude Giroux whipped the puck to Shayne Gostisbehere, who waited in the slot an absolutely buried a one-timer past Joonas Korpisalo for the team’s third goal of the game and Ghost’s first of the season:

With just under seven and a half minutes remaining, the offensive zone face-off worked its way to the blue line, where it was swung to Jake Voracek, then to defenseman Ivan Provorov, who got the puck into the left circle, unleashed the puck with all of his might, and pinged it off James van Riemsdyk, who was credited with his second tally of the evening to tie the game at 4:
