Your One Word Papelbon Reactions

Yesterday and this morning, I posed the following question on Twitter: Give me one word you would use to sum up your feelings on the Jonathan Papelbon signing. And you can't say "Papelboner."

OK, that's not a question at all, but you get the point. Many more responses after the jump.

  1. All I kept thinking was how much everyone who is not a Phillies fan right now is just instantly going to hate us.
Rube is in charge of the new evil empire.

  2. Anyone who would rather have Madson than Papelbon is a complete Phillies homer. Papelbon has been a proven closer for 6 years. Madson has only been a proven closer for one year (which was his contract year hint hint), and it was less than two years ago everyone was crucifying him when he landed on the DL after he broke his toe by kicking a chair following a blown save. Papelbon also has a postseason ERA of 1.00, WHIP of 0.81, and a World Series ring as a CLOSER. Plus, Papelbon is a year younger than Madson despite have 6 times as much experience closing, and he’s only costing us 1.5 mil more a year than the rumored Madson deal. Sure, Papelbon has struggled the last two years but he had a solid bounce back season last year. He just struggled towards the end of the season because Boston completely overused him. Some rest and a change of scenery along with correctly managing him should do wonders. It wasn’t long ago this guy was considered one of the top 3 closers in baseball. Also, for the people saying to bring back Madson as a set up man, why on earth would he want that? He’s been waiting to be “the man” in a bullpen his whole career. After having it for a year, why would he sign somewhere where he wouldn’t close? And even if you could get him to sign as a set up man, why would we pay a set up man 10-11 mil a year?! Especially when we still need to sign a shortstop and third baseman! With Boras as his agent, there’s no doubt he’ll get at least 10 mil a year. Not to mention, the fact that Madson didn’t become a reliable closer until his contract year speaks volumes. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he started declining once he got that big paycheck (see Werth, Jayson). Anyone who would rather have Madson than Papelbon is a complete Phillies homer who doesn’t understand Major League Baseball.

  3. Further believing in the possible powers of serendipity, just thought I’d toss this out there. Looking to move to Brooklyn after 4 years in Sydney. Living with relatives in Jersey now & desperate to get out. A pauper’s budget $1200-1400 for a studio/1br. In the event that a rockin’ place comes into your knowledge in which you’re not interested yourself because the place in which you’re ensconced is already so awesome, please think of a fellow foodhead.
