This should thrill our fashion editor Dan Fuller, who, a few years ago, flew to Texas for the big event. [Editor’s note: I offered him to take this post if he wanted, but presumably he was unable to see the screen with his eyes filled with tears of joy.] According to reports from Wrestlechat.net and the somewhat more prestigious 6 ABC, Philadelphia is being considered for a Wrestlemania in the near future.
From Wrestle Chat:
WWE officials are getting close to picking a location for the 2015 and 2016 WrestleMania events. One of the frontrunners is the new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, which opens for the San Francisco 49′ers in 2014, and is also hosting the 2016 Super Bowl. If Levi’s Stadium is picked, the Hall of Fame and RAW would take place from the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
There is also said to be a major Northeastern location in the running.
I contacted a source this morning who tipped us to first break the news of WrestleMania 29 being in New Jersey and he said that the Philadelphia Eagles Lincoln Financial Field is currently a top contender being considered. WWE is said to no longer be afraid of going into areas where there may be a colder climate during the event after their successful event at MetLife Stadium this year. Given Philadelphia’s history with the WWE, it all makes sense.
6 ABC contacted the WWE and received the following statement: “IF WRESTLE CHAT WANTS TO REPORT THAT THEN BE OUR GUEST. GO ON, WRESTLE CHAT, YOU KEEP RUNNING YOUR KEYBOARD. SEE IF IT’S GOOD FOR YOU. I BET YOU FEEL SAFE IN MOMMY’S BASEMENT. AT SUMMERSLAM, WE’LL FIND WHO THE REAL WRESTLING AUTHORITY IS.”
Wait… no. This is it:
Philadelphia is one of the many cities that has expressed an interest in hosting a future WrestleMania. An announcement regarding WrestleMania 31 will be made early next year.
The last – only – time Wrestlemania was held in Philly was in 1999. I remember sitting at the top of then-First Union Center (I think) after downing a few Charlie’s Burgers on the ride in from Delco. Stone Cold beat The Rock that night, and then he drank a lot of beer. It was pretty epic, for a 15-year-old.
Add Wrestlemania to the list of events Philly wants but probably won’t get:
Stanley Cup Finals
But hey, we got the Made In America Tour and the 6 ABC Boscov’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Maybe Wrestlemania would stand a better chance if the bid was to hold on the Parkway so absolutely no one would have a view of anything.
