Yesterday, as Evan Mathis was still a no-show at OTAs, a series of quotes came out of camp from players who were seemingly not bothered by the veteran offensive lineman’s absence. The story has been this: Mathis thinks he deserves more money, hasn’t gotten it, has been free to seek out a trade on his own, has not gotten offers.

Getting info from a source close to the situation, whose name might rhyme with Shmevan Nathis, Pro Football Talk offers up a different story:

Mathis contends that the Eagles previously offered to increase the salary paid to Mathis by roughly $1 million per year, from 2014 through 2016. Mathis opted not to accept it in 2014, but he was interested in accepting it in 2015. But the Eagles, per the source, told Mathis that the offer was no longer available because Howie Roseman, who had made the offer, was no longer the General Manager.

It’s like they’re pulling back the deal because Howie should’ve never offered it anyway, and if Evan wants to walk the three miles to Howie’s office to talk about it, he can. But dude’s got no power.

The question now becomes this: Will the Eagles honor the alleged deal that was offered to Mathis? It seems they had no intention of doing that before, and now that it’s turned into a public pissing match, my guess is they never will.
