The first bit of speculation once everyone was blindsided by the Sixers hiring Jerry Colangelo was: The league made them do it. After all, no one had any idea this was happening until it happened, so something had to be going on, right? Well, yeah. According to multiple reports, the league made them do it.

Initially reported by Jeff Zillgitt, and confirmed by ESPN, commissioner Adam Silver “was instrumental in forming the partnership between Colangelo and 76ers owner Joshua Harris.” But of course the league would step in, right? Because the Sixers are embarrassing the league, making a mockery of the game, and disgracing the NBA, right? Actually, it was all about Jahlil Okafor’s favorite topic– fistfights money:

Owners routinely complained about the economic drag the 76ers were inflicting on the league as the revenues of one of the largest-market teams — a franchise expected to contribute more robustly to league revenue-sharing — sagged. For many teams, games featuring the starless and woeful 76ers as the visiting team have been the lowest-attended of the season, sources said.

This is your reminder that the billionaire owners of NBA teams care more about their billions than the “integrity of the league.” Shocking, I know.
