Today is a great day for White Sox fans. Tim Anderson, the organization’s #2 prospect, has been called up. It’s the start of a new era. But with life comes metaphorical death. The White Sox have designated Jimmy Rollins for assignment, potentially putting a nail in the coffin of his career.

Rollins was not good this year. In fact, he was pretty awful, posting a slash line of .221/.295/.329 while basically playing the role of “old guy keeping the seat warm until young guy is ready.” If Rollins is done for good, that leaves… more people than you think from the World Fucking Champions who are still in the league. There’s Carlos Ruiz, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, and Cole Hamels (in reverse order by who will probably last the longest) who were stars on the team. But J.A. Happ is still pitching in Toronto, while Joe Blanton and Ryan Madson are after being out of the league for a bit.

The whole era is already over, the last remnants here (Howard and Chooch) are just barely hanging on. But the whole thing won’t be dead and buried until Cole Hamels is gone, and he’s still got years left.
